Amanda J. Carter: Week 4 (September 24-September 28)@ Fisk University

William McKissack Papers

This week, I continued processing the papers of William McKissack.  I am still going through the boxes to find and organize all of the correspondence.  While most collections have a plethora of correspondence, this collection contains less.  Unfortunately, that does not reduce the amount of time it takes to comb through each folder in each box as I look for that correspondence.  Most of what I worked on during the week was financial correspondence such as taxes and unemployment compensation.

Back to School Day, September 28

I represented The HistoryMakers and Fisk University at Pearl-Cohn Entertainment Magnet High School with author and songwriter Alice Randall.  It was a great experience!  The students took us on a tour of the school where we observed production rooms, their news station, and even a cosmetology classroom.  During the presentation, the students also sang and had dance routines for us.  Before the students’ presentation, I spoke briefly about processing the William McKissack collection at Fisk (including an explanation of what processing is) and then spoke about The HistoryMakers and the 3rd Annual Back to School program.  After the students demonstrated their amazing talents, Ms. Randall gave a wonderfully inspiring speech about how to achieve one’s dreams.  She encouraged hard work, dedication, and education.  Ms. Randall also pointed out that we are responsible for our own success.  It made for a fun and inspiring experience.

Condolences

Ms. Beth Howse, the Archivist here at Franklin Library, Fisk University, passed away this week.  She had been out this semester, due to her illness, but her passing was sudden and unexpected, nonetheless.  Ms. Howse had worked at Fisk University for at least 30 years and was a graduate from this university, so her absence will be sorely felt.  I did not have the honor to meet her personally, but I did have the privilege to speak with her briefly last week.  She was kind and considerate and helped to guide me through the next steps of processing William McKissack’s papers.   Ms. Howse was also in charge of the Fisk Mini College summer program that has been a part of a part of Fisk’s summers for decades.  Memorial services for her will be on Monday, October 1, at Fisk Memorial Chapel.  This next week at Franklin Library will be sad, indeed.  Prayers go out to the family and to Franklin Library.

Until next week…
